The Van Winkle legacy begins with Julian P. “Pappy” Van Winkle Sr., whose guiding principle—“We make fine bourbon at a profit if we can, at a loss if we must, but always fine bourbon”—continues to define the brand today. Pappy entered the bourbon business in 1893 with W.L.
