The regions
Speyside (sweet, fruity), Islay (peaty, smoky), Highlands (varies — heather, citrus), Lowlands (light, grassy), Campbeltown (briny).
Peat or no peat
Peat = smoke. Islay malts (Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Ardbeg) are heavily peated. Speyside (Macallan, Glenlivet) is unpeated. Try a flight before committing.
Age statements
