History and Origins

The GlenDronach Distillery was established in 1826 by James Allardice and a group of local farmers, making it one of the first distilleries to hold an official license following the Excise Act of 1823. It is located near Forgue, in the parish of Aberdeenshire in the Scottish Highlands.

Over its long history the distillery changed hands several times and, like many Scotch producers, experienced periods of closure and revival. It was notably closed for a stretch in the 1990s before resuming production, and later underwent a significant renaissance in reputation under ownership that emphasized its sherry-cask heritage.

The brand became part of the BenRiach Distillery Company before that group was acquired by Brown-Forman in 2016. Throughout these transitions, the distillery's identity has remained anchored in its traditional, richly sherried style.

Production and House Style

The GlenDronach's signature character comes from its extensive use of Spanish oak sherry casks, principally Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso. This maturation approach imparts flavors commonly associated with the brand: dark dried fruits, raisins, figs, treacle, chocolate, and warming spice.

The distillery is known for its full-bodied, robust malts rather than lighter, delicate styles. Many of its expressions are matured entirely or substantially in sherry wood, giving them a deep color and intense, layered profile that appeals to drinkers who favor rich single malts.

The Range and What to Expect

The GlenDronach's core lineup centers on age-statement single malts, with widely recognized expressions such as the 12 Year Old 'Original,' the 18 Year Old 'Allardice,' and the 21 Year Old 'Parliament.' These form the backbone of the collection and showcase the brand's sherry-driven signature at increasing levels of depth and complexity.

Beyond the core range, The GlenDronach has released cask-strength batches, single-cask bottlings, and various limited or specialty editions that highlight individual casks or unique maturations. These are often sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.

When buying, consider your preference: the 12 Year Old offers an accessible introduction to the house style, while older expressions deliver greater richness and concentration. Cask-strength and single-cask releases appeal to those wanting higher intensity and more distinctive character. Availability of individual bottlings can vary by batch.
