History and Origins
Glen Moray was established in 1897 in Elgin, Moray, converting a former brewery site into a whisky distillery. Like many distilleries founded during the whisky boom of the late 19th century, it experienced periods of closure and change before finding lasting stability in the 20th century.
For much of its modern history, Glen Moray was owned by Glenmorangie, during which time it built its reputation for value-driven Speyside whisky. In 2008 the distillery was acquired by La Martiniquaise, a French drinks group, which has continued to invest in and expand the brand's production and range.
Situated in Speyside — the region with the highest concentration of Scotch whisky distilleries — Glen Moray benefits from the soft water and traditions of one of Scotland's most celebrated whisky areas.
House Style and Production
Glen Moray is generally recognized for a light, smooth, and approachable house style, with characteristic notes of vanilla, honey, orchard fruit, and gentle malt. This makes it a popular choice for both newcomers to single malt and those seeking an easy-drinking everyday dram.
The distillery matures much of its whisky in ex-bourbon American oak casks, which contribute the vanilla and soft sweetness typical of its core expressions. Beyond this foundation, Glen Moray is well known for its cask-finishing program, using sherry, port, and various wine casks to add depth, spice, and fruit complexity to select releases.
This willingness to experiment with finishes has become a signature of the brand, allowing it to offer a broad and varied range while keeping its core bottlings consistent and affordable.
The Range and What to Expect
Glen Moray's lineup includes its accessible Classic range, which features a no-age-statement bottling alongside cask-finished variations such as port cask, sherry cask, and peated expressions. These are typically priced as excellent value single malts.
The Elgin Heritage range steps up in age and refinement, with age-stated bottlings such as 12, 15, and 18 year old expressions that showcase greater maturity and complexity. Beyond these, Glen Moray periodically releases limited and distillery-exclusive bottlings for enthusiasts.
When buying, consider the Classic range for approachable everyday sipping or gifting to newcomers, and the older Elgin Heritage bottlings for a more developed Speyside experience. Cask-finished editions are ideal for those wanting to explore how different woods shape the whisky's flavor.
