History and Background
BenRiach Distillery was founded in 1898 by John Duff during the late-Victorian whisky boom, situated close to the Longmorn distillery in Speyside. Like many distilleries of that era, it faced difficult early years and fell silent for a long stretch, with production of malt whisky ceasing not long after opening, though the site's maltings continued to operate.
The distillery was revived and its stills were fired again in 1965, and it went on to produce spirit for blends for decades. A pivotal moment came in 2004 when an independent group led by Billy Walker acquired the distillery and began releasing BenRiach as a single malt in its own right, developing a reputation for diverse, high-quality expressions.
In more recent years BenRiach became part of Brown-Forman's portfolio following its acquisition in 2016, continuing to build on its identity as a Speyside distillery unafraid to explore peat, wine casks, and unconventional finishes.
House Style and Production
BenRiach's signature lies in its versatility. The distillery produces classic Speyside unpeated whisky characterized by orchard fruit, honey, and barley sweetness, but it also crafts peated malt, a relatively unusual choice for the region. This gives the range an unusual breadth, from smooth and fruity to smoky and robust.
Maturation is central to the BenRiach identity. The distillery is known for using a wide array of casks, including ex-bourbon barrels, sherry butts, and a range of wine and fortified-wine casks used for finishing. This experimentation produces layered whiskies with notes ranging from dried fruit and spice to rich, dark toffee.
Expressions carry the natural fruit-forward Speyside base, with peated and heavily sherried releases adding contrast. The result is a lineup that appeals both to newcomers seeking approachable malts and to seasoned drinkers looking for more complex, cask-driven bottlings.
The Range and What to Expect
The core BenRiach range typically features age-stated single malts such as a 10 Year Old and 12 Year Old, often built around combinations of bourbon, sherry, and wine cask maturation. These offer an accessible entry into the distillery's fruit-led character.
Beyond the core, BenRiach releases older age statements and special cask-finished bottlings, along with peated expressions like The Smoky Ten and The Smoky Twelve that showcase the distillery's smoky side. Limited and cask-strength releases also appear periodically for collectors and enthusiasts.
When buying, consider whether you prefer the classic sweet, fruity Speyside profile or the smokier peated style, as both are well represented. Bottle availability varies, so exploring the current selection is the best way to find a specific age statement or finish.
